The IDPP embarked on a 10-day Networking & Partnership Mission from 13-25 October 2013 with visits to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei. Led by Dr. Derrick Cogburn, the delegation included Asst. Director of Communication Ms. Maya Aguilar and Regional Research Coordinator Mr. Pong Cruz. Coming on the heels of a successful 2013 Annual Meeting in August, the mission aimed to deepen strategic relationships and planning with partners and solidify concrete areas of collaboration. The team also participated in the 8th Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) annual symposium on 21 October and the 8th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Annual Meeting from 22-25 October in Bali, Indonesia.
The delegation’s first stop was to Singapore, where the IDPP visited Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Hosted by Dr. Peng Hwa Ang, professor of Journalism and Communications, Dr. Cogburn presented "Disability and Development as a 'Grand Challenge' for the ASEAN Region" to NTU faculty. The team then met with Dr. John Richardson, professor at American University’s School of International Service and visiting professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, as well as Dr. Astrid Tuminez, regional director of Legal and Corporate Affairs in Southeast Asia for Microsoft Corporation and IDPP Advisory Board Member. The delegation ended its day with a dinner meeting including IDPP Advisory Board Member Mr. M. Rajaretnam, IDPP capacity building participant Ms. May Low and IDPP interpreter consultant Ms. Lucy Lim.
The IDPP’s visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia continued significant planning and development of the IDPP’s education, capacity building and research programs. The delegation spent time with partner University of Malaya over two days, including senior leadership meetings with the International Institute of Public Policy and Management (INPUMA) and the Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCEd).
The delegation subsequently traveled to Bali, Indonesia to attend the 8th Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) annual symposium held on the 21 October, where Dr. Cogburn was invited to chair an opening panel discussion on "Emerging Scholars." Dr. Cogburn has played an active role in GigaNet's activities for a number of years, most notably working with Dr. Nanette Levinson to organize a widely attended and successful workshop at American University in 2011. Immediately following the GigaNet symposium, the delegation participated in the 8th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Annual Meeting held from 22-25 October. IGF brings together academics, policy makers, ICT companies, public and private sector reporesentatives and other stakeholders to discuss cybersecurity, accessibility, stability and policy issues related to internet governance.
In Bangkok, the IDPP met with Dr. Surakit Nathisuwan, vice president for International Relations at partner Mahidol University; presented on the IDPP and its cyberlearning initiatives to staff at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP); and met with Mr. Shuichi Ohno, executive director of The Nippon Foundation, and Mr. Akiie Ninomiya, executive director of IDPP outreach partner the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability.
The IDPP team's last leg of the mission took place in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, where they visited Universiti Brunei Darussalam on 28 October. Hosted by Dr. Joyce Teo Siew Yean, dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics and Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, the visit was an opportunity for the IDPP to learn more this prospective university partner who participated in the 2013 IDPP Annual Meeting and further explore partnership opportunities.
