Dr. Derrick Cogburn Presents at 22nd IPSA World Congress
Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn, IDPP/COTELCO executive director and associate professor at American University (AU), traveled to Madrid, Spain to present at the International Political Science Association (IPSA)’s 22nd World Congress of Political Science, held from 8-11 July 2012.
Dr. Cogburn presented the IDPP’s work on how technology has contributed to its education programs and research methods. His presentation, entitled Learning Beyond Borders and Barriers: The Comparative and International Disability Policy (CIDP) Program, outlined how the IDPP designed and implemented the CIDP program - the world's first virtual Master's program in disability policy.
Furthermore, the presentation described the ways in which the CIDP program integrates an innovative array of accessible cyberinfrastructure tools to deconstruct barriers which formerly prohibited geographically-distributed students and students with disabilities from participating in collaborative research and learning.
The conference, whose theme this year was “Reshaping Power, Shifting Boundaries,” brought together some of the brightest minds in comparative politics, public policy, and international relations.
In addition to hearing from Dr. Cogburn, who is a professor of International Relations in the School of International Service at AU, conference participants also heard from the Foundation of Mattei Dogan Award winner Professor Klaus von Beyme of the Institut fur Politische Wissenschaft; and Karl Deutsch award winner Dr. Alfred Stepan, who is the Wallace Sayre Professor at Columbia University.
