Dr. Cogburn Speaks at SIS International Dev. Program Friday Forum
IDPP Executive Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn spoke at a Friday Forum on “Disability and Development” held on 8 November 2013 at 5:30 PM EST at American University’s School of International Service (SIS). Hosted by the SIS International Development Program Student Association, the Friday Forum series invites scholars and speakers from the international development and policy community to discuss the field's latest news and trends in an open forum format.
Dr. Cogburn spoke on disability and development as a "grand challenge" for global policymakers and disability advocates. His presentation explored some of the policy and implementation frameworks that have been put in place to overcome this challenge, namely the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the subsequent UNESCAP Incheon Strategy to "Make the Right Real" for persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific. Dr. Cogburn payed special attention to current and future roles of information and communication technologies in enabling quality accessible learning opportunities.
Joining Dr. Cogburn were Dr. Robert Dinerstein, Professor of Law and Director of the Disability Rights Law Clinic at AU's Washington College of Law and Mr. Serge Okogo, M.A. candidate at SIS and former IDPP/COTELCO research associate. Mr. Ki’tay D. Davidson, a disability advocate who received the Champion of Change Award by the White House for his work, moderated the discussion.
