Dr. Derrick Cogburn Joins 2gether-International’s Board of Directors
Dr. Derrick Cogburn, IDPP/COTELCO executive director and associate professor at American University's School of International Service (AU SIS), recently accepted an invitation from former IDPP research assistant and AU SIS undergraduate student Mr. Diego Mariscal to serve on 2gether-International’s Board of Directors. Founded in 2007 by Mr. Mariscal in his native Mexico, 2gether-International focuses on diminishing social barriers between persons with and without disabilities.
Mr. Mariscal invited Dr. Cogburn to the Board of Directors because of his years of work in international disability as well as non-profit management and governance. Dr. Cogburn joins a dignified group of international educators and leaders in disability policy and advocacy in providing strategic and financial guidance to this rapidly-growing organization.
Understanding that students are a key population of social interaction, 2gether-International spearheads an education curriculum through a network of high schools that consists of three main elements: a mentorship program known as “Safe Space,” in which students have the opportunity to discuss social disability issues; an experiential, interactive 3-day event that exposes students to the physical aspects of living with a disability; and an end-of-year Global Summit where students from various cultures share how disabilities are perceived in their respective cultures.
Since its founding, 2gether-International has impacted the lives of over 3,000 students in Mexico and the US. Mr. Mariscal has earned numerous awards for his work, including the 2012 Architect of the Future Award and the 2012 DoSomething Grant, among others.
