IDPP Director Presents at National Academy of Sciences Workshop
IDPP/COTELCO Executive Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn presented at the “Culture Matters: An Approach to International Research Agreements” workshop hosted by the National Academy of Sciences' Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) between 29-31 July 2013 in Washington, DC. Dr. Cogburn’s presentation, “Understanding the Global, Regional and National Dynamics of Interdisciplinary Research: Lessons from a Multi-Year, Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cyberlearning Program,” focused on outlining how the IDPP has operated as an international network organization.
Representatives from around the world and from GUIRR’s three sectors – government, university and industry – were invited to participate in the event. The three-day workshop was divided into five specific meeting tracks. The tracks focused on research and agreements affecting or involving (1) people/human subjects, (2) environment and natural resources, (3) the development of software, algorithm, literature and other written materials, (4) science, engineering and manufacturing, and (5) agriculture and animal issues.
The workshop also organized a series of plenary sessions to address how culture and cultural perception impact the process by which research agreements are made and negotiated across international boundaries. Dr. Cogburn was asked to present during the “Language” session to offer participants solutions to issues related to language and cultural differences that arise in an international cyberlearning environment.
