Accessible Global Governance Side Event Keynote at COSP-8
The IDPP is delighted to announce that it offered the keynote presentation and co-sponsored the high-level side event “Accessible Global Governance: The Participation of Persons with Disabilities in the UN System and Broader Global Governance Processes” on 9 June 2015 from 1:15-2:30pm US ET in Conference Room 3 as part of its multifaceted participation during one of the world’s largest international disability community gatherings – the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP-8) from 8-12 June at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Side Event featured a keynote address by IDPP Executive Director Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn on preliminary findings from Phase I of the IDPP’s accessible global governance research study, which seeks to better understand the factors that enhance or limit the effective participation of persons with disabilities in the UN system and broader global governance processes.
The Side Event consisted of a multistakeholder panel of high-profile leading experts in disability rights and public policy, including UN Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility and former Vice President of Ecuador Mr. Lenin Moreno; WHO Goodwill Ambassador and Chairman of The Nippon Foundation of Japan Mr. Yohei Sasakawa; Former Ambassador of Ecuador to the US and Chair of the UN task force that negotiated the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) Amb. Luis Gallegos; Chief of Secretariat for the CRPD and UN focal point on disability Ms. Akiko Ito; and Chair of the UN Expert Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Ms. Maria Soledad Cisternas Reyes.
The Side Event was co-organized by The Nippon Foundation and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Japan and Ecuador to the UN; Disabled People's International; International Disability Alliance; and Institute on Disability and Public Policy.
During the second day of the COSP-8 general session on 10 June, Dr. Cogburn delivered remarks on IDPP's research and educational and capacity building programs on behalf of TNF and IDPP.
In addition, the IDPP is again offering a team of official rapporteurs for COSP-8 led by IDPP Program Manager Ms. Kerry Honeycutt Royce for the fifth year in a row. The delegation features an American University-School of International Service graduate student and one former undergraduate student, as well as two graduate students from UMASS-Boston’s School for Global Inclusion and Social Development.
This year's IDPP delegation to COSP-8 consists of Executive Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn; Assistant Director of Communication Ms. Maya Aguilar; Program Coordinator Ms. Kerry Honeycutt Royce; Regional Program Coordinator Ms. May Low; and invited guest Dr. Paola Alcazar Hernandez, Director of External Relations at Universidad del Norte in Colombia.
