IDPP Participates in Historic UNESCO and UN Disability Workshops
IDPP Executive Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn will participate in the International Expert Meeting on the Establishment of a Global Category II Centre of Excellence for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities at UNESCO headquarters in Paris from 29-30 June at the invitation of Mr. Indrajit Banerjee, Director of Knowledge Societies Division, Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO. This opportunity is one of a series of concrete outcomes that have resulted from Dr. Cogburn’s keynote presentation on IDPP’s Accessible Global Governance study at the Eighth Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP) on 9 June at the United Nations’ headquarters in New York, New York.
Following the IDPP’s presentation at COSP, Dr. Cogburn was invited back to UN headquarters for a historic inaugural Major Groups and Other Stakeholders Workshop on Governance, Transparency and Accountability from 18-19 June.
The two-day International Expert Meeting at UNESCO will bring together leading experts working in disability and public policy to provide their professional assistance in the further development of a conceptual framework for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in the State of Kuwait. Participants will also offer input on a feasibility study to expand the scope of the Centre from inclusive education to sustainable development and the application of ICTs for the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Recommendations from the expert group will be incorporated into a final feasibility study, as well as to help define the Centre’s functions and structures, and identify key programmatic activities and partners for future collaboration.
