IDPP Presents at ASEAN Disability Forum 2015
IDPP Executive Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn will speak at the ASEAN Disability Forum Conference 2015 from 19-21 October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ASEAN Disability Forum is one of the largest regional gatherings of persons with disabilities and disability advocates, with about 500 individuals from across the ASEAN region expected to attend. This year’s conference theme is “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision.” Dr. Cogburn’s presentation “Facilitating Implementation of the United Nations CRPD and SDGs through Accessible Cyberlearning in Disability Policy” will be one of three presentations offered on the socio-cultural panel from 4:00pm-5:30pm Kuala Lumpur time on 20 October.
During his presentation, Dr. Cogburn will discuss a global study conducted by IDPP on the challenges and opportunities of persons with disabilities to participate in global governance processes and making global governance processes more accessible. He will also propose technical and educational solutions for persons with disabilities to engage in the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which references disabilities eleven times.
Topics covered throughout the conference include: inclusion of disability in public policy, democratization, peace, and development, public service, empowering marginalized groups, best practices for marginalized groups, and economic empowerment. The goals of the conference are to raise awareness of the lack of inclusion in democracy, peace, and development for persons with disabilities and the implementation of disability policies, and to encourage ASEAN and the post-2015 SDGs' work in alleviating poverty for persons with disabilities. Recommendations for these issues coming out of the conference will be sent to ASEAN leaders.
