IDPP Staff Participates in Philippines' National Forum on Disability
IDPP regional staff member Ms. Della Leonor participated in a national disability rights advocacy forum entitled “National Forum 2013: 10 Goals to Make the Right Real” held between 23-26 October 2013 in Manila, Philippines. Hosted by Alyansa ng may Kapansanan-Pinoy (AKAP-Pinoy) in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Philippines (DSWD) and the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), the Forum focused on the 10 Goals of the Incheon Strategy, which is the framework of action of the Third Asia and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities (2013-2022).
Ms. Leonor joined numerous participants from Filipino government agencies, disabled peoples' organizations and civil society organizations for the three-day long event.
Representatives from key government agencies were invited to present their plans for implementation and commitments to achieve the goals set in the Incheon Strategy. In addition, several disability rights advocacy leaders delivered presentations on their experiences in realizing the 10 Goals in their communities and offer insights and recommendations for future implementation strategies. The forum was convened to accomplish three clear objectives:
- To identify and develop a pool of leaders who will use their knowledge about the Incheon Strategy to benefit their local communities.
- To develop monitoring and evaluation systems to track the progress of the implementation of the Filipino government’s Incheon Strategy plan across the nation, including in rural and secluded areas.
- Provide an open forum for representatives from all stakeholder groups to contribute to a sustainable strategy for improving the rights of persons with disabilities in the Philippines.
As the Provincial Civil Society Organization Focal Person for Capiz Province, Ms. Leonor plays an active role as a leader and an advocate of disability rights in her community. The IDPP congratulates Ms. Leonor for her efforts in creating an inclusive, barrier-free and rights-based ASEAN society!
