Indonesian delegation group photo A delegation of Rectors from universities across Indonesia visited American University on 1 November 2011. The ASEAN Studies Center and the Office of International Program Development at American University’s School of International Service jointly organized a briefing and campus tour in coordination with the Education Attache of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. The visit helped to strengthen bilateral US-Indonesia relations through a new American University-Gadjah Mada University Exchange Program. The delegation included Dr. Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri, Rector of the University of Indonesia, a partner institution of the IDPP. Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn, COTELCO/IDPP Executive Director, presented to the delegation on the IDPP project as an innovative global education model that exists at American University, while highlighting the IDPP’s existing partnership with the University of Indonesia, and various academic and outreach institutions throughout the ASEAN region.

The Rectors’ visit was in conjunction with their participation at the U.S.-Indonesia Higher Education Summit in Washington, DC, hosted by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. As part of the American University campus tour, the delegation visited the COTELCO Center and saw first-hand the virtual cyberinfrastructure tools used by COTELCO and the IDPP. The visit allowed the IDPP to further strengthen ties with a partner institution, the University of Indonesia, as well.
